Egypt

The government has approved plans to open a British university in Egypt. Currently, there are 13 state universities and five private institutions, which turn out approximately 150,000 graduates each year.

The new school, which could open as early as October 2002, hopes to emulate the success of the American University in Cairo,Egypt’s most prestigious institution of higher learning. Several British universities, including Loughborough, Strathclyde and Glasgow, have conducted feasibility studies with Egyptian authorities.

Although a location has not been selected — Cairo seems the most likely choice — there is consensus that the new university will be a not-for-profit institution. The university eventually will offer courses and programs in most academic disciplines, but the initial curriculum will focus on engineering, management and information technology.
