South Africa: Reading Levels in Early Grades Still Lag Global Norms

The 2016 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (Pirls), showed that 80 percent of students in 4th grade are not learning to “read for meaning.” Although this lands South Africa in last place of the 50 countries tested, it does show improvement from recent studies.

Sub-Saharan Africa: Private Higher Education Is Slowly Improving

Private institutions are a substantial part of the answer to increased demand for higher education capacity across sub-Saharan Africa. Ethiopia has 120 private higher education institutions, and Ghana, South Africa and Uganda each significant numbers as well. Although still largely demand-absorbing, many are seeking to increase the quality of their programs, expand scholarship opportunities, and innovate delivery methods.
