China: New College to Address Lack of International Education Degrees

Bright Scholar Education and Beijing Normal University have jointly announced the opening of Huiyan International Education College, a new institution aimed at addressing the country’s lack of international education degrees, traditionally not offered at the rest of China’s universities. Also announced was the creation of the Outstanding Educator Award, a new distinction for academics who make significant contributions to the field of international education. Huiyan International Education College is set to open in 2019.

China: Universities Rank Highly in Computer Science and Engineering Rankings

A new report from Times Higher Education shows Chinese universities have maintained their prominence in global university rankings, performing particularly well in computer science and engineering rankings. China’s universities have also received higher placements in rankings of global research, prestige, and ability. Chinese institutions have been a major factor in the increased representation of Asian universities in global university rankings overall.

Australia: Proposed Change to Political Donation Policy Could Lead to Heavy Fines for International Students

A proposed change to legislation could lead to international students having to pay fines of up to $42,000, prompting calls to exempt international students from the law. The legislation, aimed at preventing foreign political donations, doesn’t intend to target international students, who have a legitimate claim to political privileges in their host countries, particularly in regards to issues like violence, education fraud, and worker rights. In its current form, donations to charities or other organizations with a political agenda would not be allowed if implemented.

Sri Lanka: Government Reveals Plans for New Port City, Including New International School

The Sri Lankan government has unveiled a new $1.4 billion port city project, which includes plans for a new world class international school. Becoming an international education hub within Asia has been an aim for the Sri Lankan government, who have pushed to improve the country’s education sector by encouraging the establishment of private institutions and further collaboration with the private sector. Sri Lanka has many characteristics that make it an attractive destination for international students, like a low crime rate, high literacy, and a very large English speaking population.
